The history of voting in America makes plain that voting rules have always been entangled with broader issues of wealth, class and race, and political parties. Despite constitutional amendments expanding the right to vote, controversies over voting rights, voter fraud, and the value of an individual’s vote abound. Moreover, this year’s presidential election is happening not only during a pandemic, but also during a time of declining trust in our democratic institutions. If the election is close, or if it takes weeks or even months to determine the outcome, how much impact will the ongoing incendiary rhetoric about stolen elections, fraud, and Russian interference have on Americans who don’t trust the process? Join us all three Tuesday evenings as we examine the history of voting in America and the struggle for enfranchisement among the poor, women, Black Americans, and Native Americans (Sept. 1), the ongoing struggle against Gerrymandering, voter and election fraud, and voter suppression (Sept. 8), and how we can safeguard the integrity of our election infrastructure and process (Sept. 15). Ultimately, as we face these challenges, we ask ourselves, “Will our 244-year-old experiment in democracy succeed?” Click here for more information 10th Annual Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award Ceremony Virtual Award Celebrating successful public education initiatives in South Carolina Tuesday, October 6, 2020 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. via Zoom Registration here ! The Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award and Clearinghouse is dedicated to celebrating remarkable education programs that are making a difference for children and communities. The WhatWorksSC Award ceremony is one of the biggest celebrations of public education in the state and will take place virtually this year on October 6. The winner will be announced by former U.S. Secretary of Education and S.C. Governor Richard W. Riley. Read more about this program and the three finalists! View the News Release . COVID-19 Conversations: Bryan Stirling on How S.C. Prisons are Managing COVID-19 Managing a pandemic from inside a prison presents its fair share of complications. How do you manage communal spaces? What can be done about the educational and social programs crucial to the well-being of people who are incarcerated? How do you handle mass testing when results slowly trickle in? These are all questions that Bryan Stirling , director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, has given a lot of thought to since March. Earlier this month, he sat down with members of the Advance Team to share his perspective on the challenges that are currently mounting inside the state's prisons.
